I fell for the gimmick. That might have been the best part. It was fun.

The deal with the gimmick for 19 Crimes is that it’s meant to evoke the historical birth of Australia. It’s actually totally interesting. There’s a little history lesson printed on the label that hooked me in. And then there’s a surprise printed on the cork to boot!

As far as inexpensive mass-market wines go this one beats out others you can find at your local grocery store named after penguin’s and flip-flop’s. They’re easy to find, tasty and pretty consistent. Like the Chipotle of wines.

This particular Merlot had a nice smooth finish and pleasant minerality (a ridiculous wine word that means it tastes like or somehow has the essence of stone, I know I know, but I like this one). A bit thick in the mouth with dark fruit notes of blackberry and plum. Definitely full-bodied but with a sprite lift of acidity.

I ‘m making an effort to try more white wines, which are not typically my favorite. I’m such a wine racist!

It’s just that some whites have this musky, skunky flavor that I do not currently enjoy. But I will drink on, on a mission to find the white wines that will satisfy my tastes. But who knows, maybe I’ll develop a palate for skunky white wines. That’s the beauty of exposing yourself to new and different things.
