‘Hood eats: Lebanese

So many fresh discoveries await my eager-beaver attitude towards this cool little neighborhood where I now live. Effervescent with my ever-growing fondness, and with a brunch buzz, I thought up a new blog feature where I visit all the many dining establishments not far outside my doorstep and pair with them wines for delicious take-out feasts. Here’s the first one.

Cave de Saumur ‘Saumur Blanc’ Lieu-dit Les Pouches 2013
Loire, France
Bodega Classica Hacienda Lopez De Haro Crianza Rioja
Lightbulb! Brainstorm! Action! I was on the train returning home from playing tourist in the city I now call home and that sudden, lightening strike of hunger hit the very core of my belly.

The first thing that came to mind was easy, it was the dive-y little hole in the wall in my neighborhood serving up Lebanese fare that I could not stop thinking about. I oh-so desperately was just positively dying to give it a try. That night, I decided, was the night.

Barton & Guestier Chenin Blanc 2012

Vouvray, France
Sitting here tired and excited I’m trying hard to write this last blog post before I go on vacation for a week. I’ve been packing and doing laundry and making arrangements for my sweet furry bitch to be looked after while I’m away.

I wish I could say that I’ll be traveling wine country in France or even California but no, I’m going on my first cruise ever. This would not normally be my idea of a vacation. I would rather travel to Madrid and drive from there to San Sebastian and then Barcelona (which I have done) but instead I’ll be on a monstrously huge ship in the middle of the western Caribbean, literally with a boat load full of strangers. The one saving grace is that I’ll be traveling with my family who I can’t wait to spend some quality time with, even if it’s stuck with them on a ship.

I’m so distracted but dammit I’m going to get this blog post out before I go or else this delicious bottle will be nothing more than a faint and lovely memory.

Speaking of the wine, the goddamn French are so good at making this shit. Man! This Chenin Blanc had none of the overt fruitiness of the Voignier and was not as sweet. It too had a peachy sweetness but with a grapefruit pucker that made it well-balanced, for my tastes anyway. Read More

Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc + Viognier 2013

This blend reminded me of that friend we all have, you know the one. That one person that you meet up with after a long absence and you wonder why it’s been so long. You’re first happy by the reunion and have a swell ol’ time catching up, but then you have the crashing realization why it is you don’t spend more time together — this person is just too much. Over-the-top and bursting with an excess of, um, personality, for days and days — they just won’t shut up — a one-way conversationalist. You just sit there being talked at and every attempt to interject and contribute is met by an impenetrable wall of their own voice, and so you give up and look for an exit plan. It’s that friend you can only see every once in a while, and in small doses.

Peachy sweet with an effervescent lift and an interesting coppery, rusty coloring. Slightly and pleasantly sparkling on my tongue; smelled and tasted of overripe fruit. There were even tiny little bubbles that clung to the inside of the glass.
